THE LIVING FRACTURE
Fracture-Scaping begins with naturally found wood fractures. I read their ridges, recesses and planes as fields of landscape possibility, using chromatic interpretation to reveal rather than design the composition. The fracture remains the governing form and a participant in authorship.
PRESERVED FORM, PAINTED INTERPRETATION
Interpretation remains confined to naturally fractured surfaces. Unaffected exterior wood and bark are preserved, and expressive fracture geometry is not mechanically reshaped. Minimal preparation is permitted only on the horizontal base plane when required for stable presentation.
PROVENANCE AND STEWARDSHIP
The practice preserves each work’s available connection to its source, while By Nature works require documented geographic provenance and chain of custody.

CATALOGUE NOTE
Cliffside Bog is one of several viable candidates recovered from Expedition 1, Site 2. Its lettered identifier preserves its relationship to Windy Ridge, 1.2b-FSN-2026, and the shared source group while allowing its development to be documented independently.
The specimen presents a compact, enclosed fracture structure. Closely spaced vertical remnants surround a recessed interior, producing an unusual inward-facing topography. Unlike the more directional form of Windy Ridge, this candidate suggests a contained terrain—a basin, wetland, or sheltered landscape held within a fractured perimeter.
Interpretation has not begun. The specimen remains in stabilization while its structural integrity, orientation, and ability to sustain a coherent painted intervention are evaluated. Its eventual qualification as an FSN work is not guaranteed.
The source group stood within a previously disturbed area and showed evidence of prolonged exposure. The specific fracture event was not witnessed. Wind may have contributed to the material’s failure, but the cause remains undetermined.

Field and location records survive from the Expedition 1 recovery. The images below document the source group, surrounding site conditions, this candidate during recovery, its recorded location, and the written forester approval associated with the June 6 material.
