THE LIVING FRACTURE
Fracture-Scaping begins with naturally found wood fractures. I read their ridges, recesses and planes as fields of landscape possibility, using chromatic interpretation to reveal rather than design the composition. The fracture remains the governing form and a participant in authorship.
PRESERVED FORM, PAINTED INTERPRETATION
Interpretation remains confined to naturally fractured surfaces. Unaffected exterior wood and bark are preserved, and expressive fracture geometry is not mechanically reshaped. Minimal preparation is permitted only on the horizontal base plane when required for stable presentation.
PROVENANCE AND STEWARDSHIP
The practice preserves each work’s available connection to its source, while By Nature works require documented geographic provenance and chain of custody.

CATALOGUE NOTE
Rugged Ravine initially resisted a clear interpretation. A descending seam through its central vertical grain eventually suggested a narrow watercourse, allowing the surrounding fracture to resolve as an enclosed ravine.
Dense green massing rises on either side of the blue channel. Layered and peeling bark appears to cradle the painted terrain, while opposing views reveal shifting relationships among waterfall, forested valley, and enclosing ridgelines.
The work became an early exterior-consolidation study. Matte medium was applied to vulnerable bark and exposed timber to retain delaminating layers without reshaping their natural geometry. The treated bark has remained visually stable to date, although continued material movement remains possible.
DOCUMENTATION
Acquired from existing private stock before the current field-documentation protocol. Its precise harvest date, source location, and fracture event remain undocumented. The images below document the shared gifted material group during early studio selection and are not in-situ recovery photographs. The completed debossed leather CoA mat is shown in object photographs 8 and 9.
