Fracture-Scaping begins with naturally found wood fractures. I read their ridges, recesses, and planes as fields of landscape possibility, using chromatic interpretation to reveal a composition guided by the fracture. The fracture remains the governing form and a participant in authorship.
PRESERVED FORM, PAINTED INTERPRETATION
Interpretation remains confined to naturally fractured surfaces. Unfractured exterior wood and bark are preserved, and expressive fracture geometry is not mechanically reshaped. Minimal preparation is permitted only on the horizontal base plane when required for stable presentation.
PROVENANCE AND STEWARDSHIP
The practice preserves each work’s available connection to its source, while By Nature works require documented geographic provenance and chain of custody.

CATALOGUE NOTE
11-FSG-2026 developed from a loose fragment associated with a larger piece of Western larch recovered following a reported blowdown and subsequently gifted to the artist. Although geographic coordinates for the reported recovery location are retained, no in-situ photographs document the fragment before its transfer into artist custody. The work therefore remains within Genesis rather than being represented as satisfying the current Fracture-Scapes by Nature field-provenance standard.
The interpretation is concentrated on the principal fracture face. Vertical grain beyond that face was intentionally left raw, allowing the unpainted material to remain visibly distinct from the chromatically interpreted landscape. This restraint creates tension between the image and its biological support: the painted fracture invites recognition as landscape while the exposed grain continually returns the viewer to the object’s material origin.
The work contributes to the Genesis archive as a study in selective interpretation—demonstrating how an expressive fracture can being every visually available surface into the composition.
DOCUMENTATION
The reported source coordinates and transfer history are retained in the internal record. No in-situ photographs are available, and the fragment was received after its recovery from the larger blowdown material. Available documentation begins with:
